The Curator’s Wand

The Curator’s Wand is an authoring tool for designers of ubiquitous computing experiences.

The Curator’s wand is primarily intended for use in living museums or period reconstructions where placards, signs and labels are undesirable. The wand relies on a 3d compass and ultrasonic positioning system. The gumstix-based wearable framework interfaces with the compass and ultrasonics receiver and handles wireless communication via Bluetooth to the authoring platform.

The basic idea is that the curator will walk around the museum, point at different artefacts using the wand, and assign various forms of multimedia content. Behind the scene, epipolar geometry is used to triangulate the location of each artefact that is pointed at. K-Nearest-Neighbour classification is then used to recognise the locations. Members of the public can then point at the artefacts in the museum to retrieve the relevant multimedia content.
