In the Ambient Wood experience abstract, sounds are used to represent the various processes that are important in supporting children's understanding of relationships within a habitat. In the first phase of the Ambient Wood experience the sounds all relate to processes that are invisible to the naked eye, such as, photosynthesis, plant respiration. Then In the second phase the sounds relate to processes that link the animals to the plants in their respective habitats. The Children can hear the sounds in the wood by using the Ambient Horn. The sounds are location dependent, and are triggered by pingers when a child enters a pinged area. After hearing the sound the children can walkie-talkie back to the remote facilitator, to say what they think they have heard. The remote facilitator discusses the sound possibilities with the children and then triggers a relevant image (or textinformation if needed) to their handheld PDA. The sound can be replayed on the handheld PDA once the image has been transmitted, thus the children can replay the sound at a later time, if they wish.
