Domestic Ethnographic Research

The work on domestic ethnographic research has been undertaken a series of long term studies of domestic environments in order to inform the development of new technologies for the home. This work has resulted in the development of a series of different ways to present these ethnoraphic results to designers and developers

This research, conducted by ethnographers and designers at Nottingham and Lancaster, includes investigations into patterns of technology use in the home, the ecological organisation of technology use, and studies of particular domestic technologies. In addition to elaborating social characteristics of technology use in the home relevant to the design of particular technologies (such as calendars and email), these studies address a number of distinct conceptual and methodological issues in design and have been reported in a range of international conferences. This work falls into two main conceptual treatments

Patterns of home live considers the ways in which ethnographic studies of domestic life can be presented as a series of patterns. An initial repository of these patterns is available on line here.

Domestic Traffic considers the routes various media take as they move through the home and the diverse sites that emerge for media use. Each of these sites offer a potential location for novel technologies.
