Deployed appliances

Deployed appliances are completed systems that are inter-related or interconnected in that each is designed for and used within a particular interactive experience, and is deployed within a particular setting.

Generic devices

Generic devices are completed "singular" devices that can be specialised for deployment but are not customized to any particular setting or use. This work combines communication infrastructures and physical sensing devices to provide the core building blocks for the construction of deployed devices.

Device Fabrics

Device "fabrics" focus on the construction of new devices, and provide basic building blocks and composition principles for integration of devices. They provide connectivity and computation that allows the composition of device assemblies

Devices

The work within the devices challenge complements the work on Understanding Interaction and Infrastructure by focusing on the nature and integration of the devices used to interleave physical and digital interaction. This has led to the development of both new forms of interactive device, and new technologies to realise future devices.

This work has resulted in a collection of over 40 different forms of device, the majority of which have been deployed within experience projects. Details of these different devices are collated in the on-line Equator Infrastructure Repository.

The devices range from technological frameworks for building systems, through generic devices, to deployed appliances that are situated within experiences. It is not possible to provide a comprehensive listing of all of the Equator devices within this document, but the following examples provide an indication of three categories of device: device fabrics, generic devices and deployed appliances.
