The University of Sussex

The Interact Lab is a research centre concerned with possible interactions between people, technologies and representations. Its focus is on developing novel user experiences in a variety of settings, including the home, schools, public spaces and work.

A major Interact goal is to create innovative experiences by embedding physical artefacts in the environment with intelligence. Another is to understand the socio-cognitive basis by which people interact with novel media and environments.

It is based in the Department of Informatics (formerly the school of Cognitive and Computing Sciences) at the University of Sussex.

It has a mix of faculty, researchers and postgraduates from backgrounds in psychology, computer science, AI, interaction design, hardware engineering and the arts.

Current focuses of our work within EQUATOR include the following;

  • Playing and learning theme
  • Chromarium: ‘Mixed reality environment (MRE) to enable children to explore novel ways of creating and mixing colour’
  • Hunting of the Snark: ‘An adventure game designed to promote novel forms of playing and learning for young children’
  • Ambient Wood I : ‘A field trip with a difference’
  • Ambient Wood II : ‘A field trip with a difference’
  • Ambient Wood II - Classroom sessions
