Research Interests:

Making Maps of Carbon Monoxide Pollution Using Tracked Mobile Sensors

Summary

Investigation into the advantages of using mobile sensors over the more traditional fixed sensors. Development of techniques for improving and correcting the recorded GPS position to allow for more accurate positioning of samples in an urban environment, ultimately leading to a fully automatic and reliable system that can be used with large numbers of sensors carried by people during their everyday lives. As part of the data visualisation, the data is displayed on a 3D map of the city, placing it back into a virtual representation of the environment in which it was collected. Techniques for extracting and displaying scientifically recognisable features present in this data are currently being investigated.

Project contributions: A large amount of carbon monoxide data for three separate areas of London has been collected, together with an equal amount of data about GPS. The carbon monoxide dataset has been compared with data collected by other scientists at the same location and has been shown to contain expected features for that area, within the limits imposed by GPS inaccuracies. Software has been developed to visualise this data in both 2D and 3D, and also to correct the position errors imposed by the GPS.
